Wipe and Reinstall High Sierra

I got a new MacBook Pro less than a week ago, which came from the factory with High Sierra (10.13.3). Tried using Migration Assistant to move the data and apps from my El Capitan (10.11.x) ancient MacBook Pro (Early 2008, which cannot be upgraded to any newer OS version) to the new machine. Having many very weird problems.

Tried reloading the OS, but the problems remain. Have decided I probably will have to wipe and reload High Sierra. So... What's the procedure for this? I found the one for El Capitan, but would like confirmation that the procedure is still the same. Thanks!

2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB memory

First, when I got my current Macbook Pro, I did multiple Factory restores using Internet Recovery (Command-Option-R). So it should be possible to keep trying until you are happy.

Second, you have a lot of junk on your system that is being pulled over via Migration assistant.

With respect to Kaspersky anti-virus, I agree with Eric Root, remove it.

You should also go through the EtreCheck output and remove everything you no longer need. Especially the kernel extensions. If you really need some of those kernel extensions, then make sure you have a version compatible with macOS High Sierra.

but if you would like to explain what you're seeing the volunteers here might be able to offer some suggestions before you resort to a repair or reinstall

Thanks for your quick reply.

I'm seeing a number of strange behaviors. For many (but not all) data files, when I double-click the file (document, spreadsheet, JPEG, etc.), I get the message, "[filename]" is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash. But there is nothing wrong with the file. If I launch the associated app manually and open the file from inside of it, the file opens fine. I can create a brand-new document (I tried this with an Excel spreadsheet), save it, close Excel, then try to reopen it by double-clicking the spreadsheet file, but it fails this same way (but opens fine using File > Open). PDF files seem to work okay; at least, every one that I have tried has worked (with Acrobat Reader). And it's not just MS Office apps; if I try to open a JPEG file with Preview that way, I get the same problem. Pages (6.3.1) documents won't open, either. And get this: If I open and close an existing file from the Finder without changing or saving it, it will thereafter refuse to launch from the Finder.

I might suggest you wipe and install but before you do that I might also suggest you create a new administrative account, test out the issues and if they do not occur any longer open your backup disk and manually pull the files to the desktop instead of using Migration Assistant. If you use a Time Machine disk these files can be found in the alias folder named Latest

This is what I get for using Migration Assistant too many times! Lots of cleanup required. Thinking I'll have to go through the pain of just re-installing the packages and files I really need. Probably worth it.
