Disable search suggestions in Safari

I am trying to use Safari 11.0.3 on an iMac running Sierra (OS 10.12.6) but it annoyingly makes search suggestions every time I type something in the Search bar window. I have gone to Preferences to disable this function by unchecking everything (see attachment), but it persists. What else can I do? (Safair is NOT the default browser on this system; does that matter?)

You wrote in the question - I am trying to use Safari 11.0.3 on an iMac , its your choice to use safari or any other browser with your desired search engine link .And if you want to uncheck the settings in safari preferences > under search , its your decision once they are unchecked they should remain unchecked , what problems have you faced , do you use some anti virus , installed some softwares , any apps in your Mac use https://etrecheck.com/

Thanks, tygb. I use Sophos as a virus protection but I don't use entrecheck. As I said in my post, I have unchecked the selections in the Search tab of Safari Preferences with the intent of suppressing these "suggestions," but it seems to have no effect. Whenever I type in the search window, Safari and Google offer useless "suggestions" that simply clutter the page. As an experiment, I removed all bookmarks except for a few items in the Favorites bar, but that just gave Safari a smaller universe of items from which to make irrelevant "suggestions." For example, I have nothing in the Favorites bar that begins with the letter K, but if I type K in the search bar, Safari suggests "The New York Times." This tells me that despite what I did on the Search tab of Preferences, the function has not been disabled and Safari is still trying to offer "suggestions." So to repeat my original question, what else do I have to do to turn off this function?
