endless loop, two factor authentication

I am trapped in an endless loop asking for my Apple ID, on all my devices then an approval number, but there is no place to put it. over and over... Now I'm not signed in to iCloud, I'm getting a message that some things won't work and I can't get out of this mess!!

Please help!!!

Hello aseletzky,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are having issues with being asked for your Apple ID and verification code over and over on your Mac. To help with this issue, you may need to put your Apple ID into account recovery with these steps:

On Mac

  1. Go to Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Click Forgot Apple ID or password.
  3. Enter your Apple ID, then click Continue.
  4. Enter your trusted phone number, then click Continue.
  5. Finish the onscreen steps, which differ based on your access to your trusted phone number or another device.

What comes next?

After you request account recovery, you get an email with a confirmation of your request, the date and time of when you can expect to regain access, and a link to cancel account recovery. Next, wait for the recovery process to finish, which might take a few days or more.

When the process completes, Apple sends you a text or automated phone call with instructions to regain access to your account. Follow the instructions to immediately resume use of your Apple ID.

Check the status, start over, or try to shorten the wait

Here's how to cancel or restart the process, see if recovery is pending, or try to shorten your wait time:

  • If you remember your Apple ID and sign in—or regain access to a trusted device that's already signed in—account recovery cancels itself for you. You can continue using your Apple ID as usual.
  • Did you start account recovery from iforgot.apple.com, and then access one of your trusted devices? If so, restart account recovery from the settings on that device, instead of through iforgot.apple.com.
  • Want to check the progress of your recovery request? Go to iforgot.apple.com. You'll see the amount of time until your account is ready for recovery or when more information will be available.
  • You might be able to provide credit-card details and shorten the recovery period from iforgot.apple.com. If you’re given the option to confirm your credit-card details, an authorization request goes to the card issuer. If you enter the correct details but you're asked to reenter the correct security information, contact your card issuer. The issuer might be declining your authorization attempts.

Sterling, thank you for your reply. If I do this are you saying I will not have access to my devices for a few days? I did not forget my password, I know exactly what it is. It's just that the mac gets stuck so I can't enter the special code from my iPad or iPhone? Is this really the only way? I don't want to be locked out for a few days. I was already having a problem with my mac not syncing contacts, but my iPhone and iPad do. There is also a badge app icon that appeared two days ago on the settings icon. It will not go away no matter what I do. This is not a widespread problem? Just me? At this moment two-factor authentication is ON and I think that's what's messing me up. Is there any way I can turn it off with the mac stuck like this? It sounded like a good idea but it is way too much trouble, I want it off now!!

Thank you,

annette
