Lag using Airplay between MacBook Pro and Apple TV

This is still not resolved. I'v got a MB Pro 2016 with itouch bar. Mirroring on Apple TV started to lag for video, which did not happen for the older MB Pro. There was a stream about that question it was closed.

At the genius bar they told me my Apple TV was old. The problem is still there with Apple TV 4k.

When I restart the Apple TV it works ok for a while. Still not normal.

I use Subler to turn some MKV into MP4, which is often enough with H.264 video (stream copy) and AC-3 audio (stream copy) and subtitles. It also has nice tagging features. iTunes compatible, so that is nice if you want to maintain a browsable library in a single place.

I stopped using MPlayerX, for its malware/adware practices.

VLC’s tvOS version allows temporarily storing multimedia files on the Apple TV disk (“Remote Playback”), in any VLC supported format. Cool, but the transfer is an extra step.

It also allows for accessing SMB shares (e.g. your Movies folder) and streaming directly from that.

PlayerXtreme also allows streaming multimedia, including MKV, from SMB shares, without converting or editing.

There are many others. Some pricy (subscription even), some invasive.

You can AirPlay a (compatible) video or Mirror screen playing a video using AirPlay – they are not the same. Screen Mirroring lets your MBP re-encode the screen as a new on-the-fly movie, which will lag, possibly stutter, and be of lesser quality.

Let your MBP send just the video file to the Apple TV for smooth playback. Note that the MBP won’t show that AirPlay video at the same time.

VLC tvOS is a good solution, thanks!

I can play from the time capsule (but then I have to load the files on the time capsule)

I can play as remote playback (but then I have to open a browser, drag and drop the file on the right address, and the content is downloaded, not just played)

I can play through local network, this is my favorite, it needs a little more than file sharing: in file sharing -> options, tick smb and activate the account.

Still very disappointed that what worked fine last year does not anymore. Activation of Airplay is much easier than opening the Apple tv etc (plus the latest remote is a pain). Having been a spoiled mac user for ages I am used to easy.
