Unable to install itunes

I have been trying to install the latest update of iTunes (12.7.3) on my windows 10 computer.

Multiple times I downloaded the update from a pop-up warning from iTunes itself that directed me to the Apple website, but was unsuccessful with the install.

Tonight I decided to uninstall iTunes completely like I have done in the past and get a fresh download from the Apple website. Once the uninstall was done I shut down the computer then did another restart after powering it back on like I have done for past versions of iTunes and other applications.

The download was successful but when I went to do the install I got half way through and a message popped up stating: "There is a problem with the Windows install package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

This is a private computer and have never had issues in the past uninstalling iTunes and then reinstalling it.

In a desperate attempt to install iTunes I turned all security software off and attempted the install again, this included Windows defender and my anti virus software, but still no success.

I checked on my Windows software and did find that I was missing one component of an update. This has now been updated and installed and the computer has been restarted but I am still having the same issue as above.

Is there a way to download previous versions of iTunes or can someone please point me in the correct direction to get a fix for this issue?

Windows 10, Version 1709

That error is usually caused by a sticky copy of Apple Software Update.

Try repairing Apple Software Update from the Programs and Features control panel, then uninstall it before trying to reinstall iTunes. If it won't repair try the Microsoft troubleshooting utility mentioned in note 1 of the following guide. If it still won't uninstall you can remove all Apple components that will uninstall then use the steps in Install missing components to install everything apart from Apple Software Update.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

Thank you for this well put together information.

Thankfully I only needed to go as far as the Microsoft trouble shoot utility note 1 and by using the Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed was able to uninstall the sticky section and immediately reinstall the correct update with success.

I now have iTunes running back to its former glory.

Ironic that now I fix it and an update for iTunes just came out 3 days ago. Now I know what to do if the same problem arises again.

Thanks
