Does Using Apple Hardware Test still work?

I tried with D key, no reaction; I tried with Option and D key, also no reaction.

I tried with Installation Disk, disc is not accepted.

How do I go about this?

I have an iMac 20", early 2009 and have El Capitan version 10.11.6 installed, processor 2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo

Memory 4GB 1067 Mhz DD3

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), iPhone 5s

I believe your model is too early for Internet Recovery which is why option-D doesn’t work. You probably need the factory restore discs, where one disc would include AHT.

There might also be a way to run AHT through a USB flash drive. I set up a small partition and copied over a few files from Apple’s servers corresponding to my particular machine. Then I had to do a few things to “bless” the partition so it would boot using option at power on.

Thank you for your reply, I have also tried to use the Application Install DVD where AHT is located.

My Superdrive does not see any disc, all spin for a while and are then ejected, so no longer any music, photo's, films or documents on any recorded disc, or bought films on DVD, no longer any cd's or dvd to be burned, which is all very disappointing. I've tried dvd lens cleaner disc but no result. Running Disc Utility does not give any indication.

This is my reason for trying to find out if the problem with the Superdrive can be detected by AHT, but start-up does not go into AHT, after about 45 till 60 seconds of grey monitor the apple icon comes up and start-up continues, no icon of AHT. While in my booklet 'Everything Mac' under Using AHT nothing is mentioned about solutions by way of using Internet or WiFi, let alone USD drives, so I don't know about any different possibilities.

Possibly there is no solution, except perhaps replacing the Superdrive in my iMac, which is rather costly.

If you think you can do something with a usb drive, I would be interested, thank you very much!
