The Apple pencil with Numbers

The recent update to Numbers now lets you draw with an Apple pencil. That’s great. However, I rarely would want to draw on a spreadsheet. What I do use often with my Apple pencil in Numbers is scrolling the screen and selecting cells. This now seems to be disabled? I can only draw now with my Apple pencil. Is there anyway to “toggle” the function of the Apple pencil on and off?

There does not appear to be - see https://help.apple.com/numbers/ipad/4.0/

With an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, the apps see the pencil as a drawing instrument only. The help files refer to using your finger to navigate. And if yiu have a pencil paired with the iPad, you cannot draw with your finger either.

I deal mainly with spreadsheets and have found the new “feature” so limiting that I have set my Apple Pencil aside until the company sees its way to bring back the navigation feature. For me right now a generic stylus that I received in the mail as a sample is working better for me than the Apple Pencil. Who needs to draw on a spreadsheet????

Apple won’t DO anything unless users send/report feedback on these iOS iWork issues.

You can send feedback here.

I contacted Apple Support and they advise me that I cannot turn my pencil off now. Like many people I purchased it when I purchased my iPad Pro - as a navigation tool, especially for Numbers. Now all I van do is crime rubbish over the screeen in Pages and Numbers.

I have submitted my ‘disdain’ on the Apple Feedback Pages for both Numbers and Pages - I wait with baited breathe for this issue to be resolved. Currently I wasted money on my pencil!
