Links won't open in El Capitan TextEdit

Using TextEdit in SnowLeopard, I previously created a large document containing many folders and files with dozens of handy internal links. Subsequently I put my document on an external storage drive, and I erased SnowLeopard hard drive and installed El Capitan os10.11.6. Then I brought in my document from storage. The document opens in TextEdit and works fine. But now the links do not work. I receive error messages if I click on any link, as follows: The file “example.rtf” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

mea culpa! My fault entirely: My internal document links, created in SnowLeopard, seemed to not work in El Capitan because in the file address path I had neglected to change the old User name (used in SnowLeopard) to the new User name which I choose when I installed El Capitan. Solution:

file:///Users/oldName/Desktop/MyFolder/fileA.rtf > file:///Users/newName/Desktop/MyFolder/fileA.rtf

Where is the example.rtf file?

Clearly it would have to be in the exact filesystem location as the original link pointed to in order for that link to work. If that example.rtf file was referenced by file:///Users/yourname/Desktop/example.rtf, then if the file were present, TextEdit in El Capitan would launch a new window opened to that document.

I don't quite understand your reply, fault entirely my own, you are more familiar with term "referenced" than am I. In any case, the structure is as follows:

file:///Users/1spider2/Desktop/MyFolder/fileA.rtf

file:///Users/1spider2/Desktop/MyFolder/fileB.rtf

In fileB, I have link to fileA with that address. All of my links worked fine when created in SnowLeopard. Now none work in El Capitan.
