Manually Linking Proxy Files in FCPX

I am new to editing 4K footage in FCPX, and have started a new project where the client has sent me both the proxy files and the original files 4K files.

Is there any way I can re-link the proxies and originals in FCPX without generating my own proxy files?

Camera generated proxies don’t seem to work with FCP. I think they all use formats or resolutions or track structures that FCP won’t accept. It really wants a very specific format with the exact length, timecode, and track layout, and name of course. It doesn’t seem to care much about the codec or the resolution as long as it’s the same aspect ratio.

I tried this by doing the following steps:

- Imported one 4K clip into FCP project

- Created proxy media and found location of proxy file

- Copied all of the other proxy files to the same location as the first one.

- Imported the rest of the 4k clips and created proxy media.

FCPX still did the same process for creating the proxy files, but in the location only the proxy files I copied across were there. So I guess in that sense it worked, and would save some memory space.

I was more hoping for a work-around that didn't involve FCPX doing any processing other than just linking to the existing proxy files.
