How can I access dial-up internet?

Have a dial-up modem, but the "dial-up" choice is grayed out in Network Setup Assistant.

All devices running 10.11.

Any suggestions welcome.

In a remote location with no other choice for internet at this time...

Thank you!

Thank you for your help.

1. The modem is connected by USB port.

2. I have tried with 3 devices:

iMac, MacBook and MacBook Air, all running OS10.11.

3. The description of the modem stated it does NOT need driver.

I don't have the modem with me, but got from amazon:

The first 2 results in Roger's link are not what you need either.

The Dial-Up Modems are as simple as the ethernet connector you have. But are in fact dial-up modems

This one for instance:

The macOS version, should not be a problem. But you do need to get an actual modem. Not a Cable Modem mind you which is an entirely different thing.

Amazon (USA) list the US Robotics modem referred to by VikingOSX here - of course we don't know what country you are in. It looks a good one to go for - you need to be careful of the others, some work only with Windows and some oddly enough work with all flavours of OSX except 10.11. You will also need, if it's not supplied with the modem, a 'modem cable' having an RJ11 plug (like an ethernet plug but smaller) at one end and whatever goes into the telephone wall socket at the other (BT plug in the UK but I don't know about the USA).

Incidentally, in the unlikely event that anyone offers an Apple USB modem, don't buy it (it's been out of production for some time) - it's only an interface, and relies on the actual modem being built into the Mac, which it isn't in recent models.

Not sure that's true... I have one here, identified in System Profile under USB:

Product ID:0x1401
Vendor ID:0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version:2.02
Serial Number:000000
Speed:Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer:Motorola, Inc.
Location ID:0x3d100000 / 1
Current Available (mA):1000
Extra Operating Current (mA):0

Haven't used a dialup modem in a very long time, but last one I had was one of these. Is that not a modem?
