Why don't my iPhone photos transfer when I connect it to my new iMac with High Sierra?

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

after opening photos, I kept looking in imports and nothing was there...then I saw my iPhone icon in the column and clicked on that ...there were the photos! Thank you so much
