Mid 2012 Mac Book beachballing

I've run a diagnostics check, and I did what I thought was necessary. Although I've done everything I've thought was necessary, the issue will not resolve. I'm here for additional advice.

EtreCheck version: 4.1.4 (4A203)

Report generated: 2018-04-02 16:10:30

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 11:21

Performance: Poor

Problem: Beachballing

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

No Time Machine backup - Time Machine backup not found.

Poor performance - EtreCheck report took over 10 minutes to run. This is very unusual.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Upgradeable hard drive - This machine’s hard drive could be replaced with an SSD. This would dramatically improve your machine’s performance.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

Hello adamfrombiloxi,

There is no obvious software cause. But an EtreCheck report with a runtime over 10 minutes usually indicates a hardware problem. Most likely, it is a failing hard drive. The 2.5" hard drives in machines of that vintage tend to die after 2-3 years. So, if you have a MacBook Pro from 2012 that acts like it has a failing hard drive, it probably does.

The nice thing is that it is very easy to replace the hard drive in that machine with an SSD. I doubt an actual Apple Store would perform an upgrade like that. But an Authorized Apple Service Centre should do it for you. If you are handy with electronics, you could even do it yourself. This is one of the easiest repairs to do. As long as you have the machine open, may as well upgrade the RAM too.

I can vouch what others are saying - that an SSD will make things go a lot smoother. I got a lot of beachballing, slow application start/quit times, long boot times, etc. The worst was when I wanted to pick an alternative application to open a file, like Preview to open a PDF when Adobe Reader was my default. It not only took maybe 30-40 seconds to bring up the list of available applications, but I had to hold it there and do nothing else or it would reset. Now I hold it there and the list of applications is up in a split second.

There isn't that much of a difference in performance of recent SATA SSDs. They're fast, but the limit is really the speed of the SATA III interface. The capacity of the SSD doesn't really matter when it comes to performance. The primary need is to host the operating system and applications, as well as provide swap space (when you run out of RAM). Some people just buy a relatively small SSD and then use a larger capacity external hard drive for bulk data like photo or videos.
