I don't keep too much important stuff on the disk so i use a continuous iCloud backup.

So then more RAM should help. My Mac's got two memory slots, both are occupied by two 2 GB RAM cards.

apparently a mid 2012 MacBook Pro has a maximum capacity of 8 GB RAM (MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support).

So maybe I should upgrade the RAM to 8 GB and get a SSD?

to run MacOS Elcapitan or later in inappropriately-responsive way, you need 6GB or more of Real RAM memory. If you provide less, the rest will be simulated on your Boot drive, and that is very slow when your drive is working properly.

When editing , as far as RAM goes, "Never Enough!"

Your drive may not be working properly, as Bad Blocks will increase the time to do anything almost exponentially.Readers who have installed an SSD drive (250-ish GB or larger) report: "It's like getting a whole new computer!"

What is the date of your latest Backup, and by what method?

Standard RAM: 4 GB Maximum RAM: 16 GB*

Details: 4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free.
*Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that this model actually is capable of using up to 16 GB of RAM with two 8 GB memory modules.

Apple does not recommend what they have not tested exhaustively. Those denser RAMs were not available when that Mac was introduced.
