Macbook 2010 Pro running extremely slow - beach balling

Hello,

First time poster despite a vintage 2010 Macbook Pro.

  • 2.4Ghz i5
  • 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (upgraded from 4GB a few years ago)

A recent upgrade to HighSierra 10.13.3 has led to constant beach balling across the board - booting up, starting- and running all applications. Have cleared cache, browsing history and cookies - makes no difference. Normally running Chrome and same issue with either Safari and Firefox.

Suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Most likely an SSD would resolve the problem. I can't guarantee it. The only way to guarantee that the hard drive needs to be replaced is to replace and see if the problem is resolved. In some instances, the problem could be the hard drive cable, which is inexpensive. In other instances, the problem could be the logic board, which is expensive.

But if you did want to replace the hard drive, I would recommend OWC. Here are the OWC replacement drives for your machine: https://eshop.macsales.com/upgrades/macbook-pro-15-inch-mid-2010-2.4-ghz/interna l-drives

Considering that you don't need much storage and you want to keep the price down, I would recommend a 250 GB drive. OWC also has hard drive cables, should the SSD not deliver a dramatic speed increase. OWC also has instructions and toolkits, although a hard drive replacement on that machine is not very difficult.

Yes, I wouldn't expect any change in performance since DU made no repairs. You're running several items that I'm not familiar with which may be adware that Etrecheck didn't flag. They could be from a corrupt install of Flash Player.

Does running Malwarebytes turn up anything? Other than that, I'm at a loss to explain the problem other than a failing hard drive. Disk Utility may not report anything until it's too late.

Apr 3, 2018 11:25 AM in response to 7ctmpa

You're welcome. The only other thing I could suggest is a clean install of High Sierra on an external disk. If this runs well, then load you software back piece by piece and see where problems begin to occur. If you can load all your software and it still runs well, then the problem is with the internal disk.

Apr 3, 2018 1:07 PM in response to 7ctmpa

Hello 7ctmpa,

If your EtreCheck report takes 37 minutes to run, and especially if there was a failure to find any hard drives, it is most often a hardware failure. Most likely, it is the hard drive. Your computer is vintage, so Apple may not work on it. You might have to find someone else. Try to find someone who is an Authorized Apple Service Centre. You might consider an Apple Store - to look for a new machine.

Apr 3, 2018 2:36 PM in response to 7ctmpa

Hi

I just ran a new Etrecheck report given the improved performance at the moment. Performance still classified as "poor" although three of the major issues have disappeared: No disk drives found, No sytem uptime found, Unable to determine operating system version. Also, report took 12m v 37 to generate and suggested upgrading to an SSD would improve performance.

Not sure what to believe now...but as long as it works.

Nothing has really changed much. EtreCheck relies on lower-level Apple utilities for its data. They seem to cache data between runs. So, if EtreCheck runs really slow, or has a major failure as above, if you keep running it, it will improve. But remember, your "improved" time of 12 minutes is still well within the range of hardware failure. It is 8 years old. That appears to be the original hard drive. Your EtreCheck report does not list a Time Machine backup. Making a backup should be a priority right now.

thanks for the input

Could replacing the original HD with an SSD resolve the hard drive issue? If so, what would you recommend - I don't want to spend more than necessary given the Mac? I keep all my data, documents etc in the cloud - Gmail, Dropbox, Google Drive. Basically "only"applications on the HD.

Macbook 2010 Pro running extremely slow - beach balling
