Slow borderline unresponsive MacBook Pro

Hi All,

Purchased this Macbook second hand a few years back, its been great but it has been on a gradual performance decline to the point where it is near unusable unless it is right after a restart. Hoping for advice. Ran an Etre, here it is. Thanks in advance for anyones insight.

CleanMyMac is a known cause of slow Macs. It does adds nothing and extracts a performance penalty--It has to go. I suspect yo uruntime will improve with it gone.

Four GB RAM is getting smallish for OS 10.13 and definitely small if you must use the The Great Resource Hog, Google Chrome. And it crashed yesterday. Your computer can accommodate up to 8GB RAM.

You MUST remove cleanMyMac.

Since the memory use algorithm changed completely in Mavericks, CleanMy Mac works at cross purposes to macOS memory management. If you are lucky, it has not done too much damage and you do noted a re-install of macOS.

The new Mantra is"Unused RAM is Wasted RAM" and MacOS will keep RAM mostly full, but is ready to discard expendable items in an instant when an Application needs more RAM. Activity Monitor's Memory Pressure indicator is the new measure of whether you have enough real RAM:

User uploaded file

Your memory is in a world of hurt at the moment due to two reasons (in addition to CleanMyMac):

The first is that ElCapitan and later require at least 6GB of real RAM for appropriate responsiveness. If you have less, the rest is simulated on your Boot drive, and yours is slow (and may also be having some Bad Blocks problems).

The second is that your Browser, Chrome, is a notorious resource hog, and has not been updated to be faster or more efficient. Better choices today are current versions of FireFox and Safari.

your Mac can accept up to 16GB RAM:

Standard RAM: 4 GB Maximum RAM: 16 GB*

Details: 4 GB of RAM pre-installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free.
*Originally, both the official and actual maximum RAM was 8 GB. However, as confirmed by site sponsor OWC, if running OS X 10.7.5 or higher, updated with the latest EFI, and equipped with proper specification memory modules, this model can support up to 16 GB of RAM.

Wanted to say thanks to both of you for the advice. Noticeable difference having uninstalled it. Used the uninstaller on CleanmyMac and it seems to have gotten rid of itself. Tried to find its remnants after the uninstall in launch agents as suggested in another post but the file didn't seem to be there, perhaps it got itself there to.. I hope. In any case I can't find any further trace of it atm.

Anyhow, thanks. Next steps seem to be upgrading the ram, I've found a compatible 16gb on Amazon, and switching to a SSD. Seems well worth the investment compared to a new Macbook. Some questions about installing the SSD but I'll start a new thread for that. Cheers
