Problem: Computer is too slow

Description:

Computer is super slow. 5+ minutes to boot up. Also was on premiere pro and then the OS forced the application to quit because I ran out of application memory, and it was the only application open. Has happened 5 times tonight and I have no idea what is going on. Even after restart, no improvement.

The simplest way to repair the File System Directory is to Restart in Safe Mode (hold shift at startup). This does one pass of Disk Directory Repair before MacOS loads, adding about five minutes and a progress bar while it works. It then loads an exceptionally lean set of extensions, not including the accelerated graphics drivers or any third-party extensions.

You will need your user-id and password to proceed. Screen refresh will be wonky and quite slow, but ultimately accurate. Problems that occur in regular mode but not in Safe Mode can be isolated in this way.

--------

Your report does not show a Backup drive. If you do not have a recent backup, you are one drive problem away from losing everything. if you already have a local drive-based backup in place, that is great. If you would like advice on how to start one, just ask.

Once you have a Trusted Backup, there is a lot more you can do to remove invasive add-ons wholesale.

any pictures on those external drives? any documents you might like to see again? and names and contacts for people your would like to talk to again?

Time Machine can be set to skip System files, although most people don't use it that way. I do because I see a re-install as a common debugging technique, and I am often running developer stuff on my computer, which makes it crash more often.

If you buy one, a drive 2 to 3 times or larger than your boot drive is preferable for long term trouble-free operation. Do not pay extra for a drive that is fast. (You can get by for a while with a "found" smaller drive if necessary, but it will eventually become annoying).

Attach your external drive and use

System preferences > Time machine ...

... to turn on Time Machine. It may ask to initialize the new drive, and that is as expected.

Time Machine will then spend all afternoon making your first full backup. You can continue to do your regular work while it does this. The first Full Backup is by far the biggest backup. After that, it will work quietly and automatically in the background, without interrupting your regular work, and only save the incremental changes.

Time machine's "claim to fame" is that it is the backup that gets done, because it does not ruin performance of the rest of the computer while doing its backup operations. You do not have to set aside a "Special Time" when you only do backups. When you need it, it is much more likely to be there.

You have exceeded the amount of real RAM available and started paging.

Virtual Memory Information:

Available RAM 9.67 GB
Free RAM 5.78 GB
Used RAM 6.33 GB
Cached files 3.89 GB
Swap Used 341 MB

By far the biggest resource hog you are running is google Chrome. With new releases from Firefox and a new version of Safari available, there are faster, less resource-intensive Browsers readily available.

As already mentioned, your file system needs repair.

CleanMyMac works at cross-purposes to MacOS memory managment in Mavericks and later. Everything MacOS is caching to improve speeds, CleanMyMac unloads.

You seem to be running Intego backup. if you are also running their Virus barrier, that is a serious waste of resources. It adds no protection over what MacOS ElCapitan and later already provides, at a tremendous cost in system resources.

So when I was having problems, the only application was premiere pro. I quit everything to get the best performance possible. Premiere has listed as minimum specs is 8gb so 16gb should be more than enough right? Like I said I've been fine on these specs for a few years.

Does clean my mac really work? A lot of people say to not bother with it. And I have no idea what intego backup is... I never personally downloaded it

Aug 27, 2018 10:10 AM in response to Kabbott622

Does clean my mac really work?

Not since 10.9 Mavericks. The new mantra is, "Unused RAM is RAM that could be used for speedup".

To that end, your Mac compresses some data, and caches previously-read files to speed subsequent access to the same data. It leaves RAM nearly fill at all times, but if an Application asks for more, MacOS knows exactly what to free to satisfy that request (without paging), and can do so instantly -- up to a point.

CleanMyMac tries to unload everything from RAM. That undoes all the speedups.

Your particular Mac is unique in just how many add-ons you have loaded into RAM at all times. The number is remarkably high. If you do not recognize any one of them, they should be removed. (if they were essential, you can always add them back later.)

Aug 27, 2018 12:42 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Awesome. Ya I don't have a back up because all I really have on the main computer drive are applications and programs. All files and videos are saved on external drives.

When you do a time machine back up, does it also back up the add-ons and possibly malware? Since it is just programs that I have that I can reinstall, is it worth backing it up?
