Slow Macbook Pro, Frequent Crashes

My MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2017, 3.5 GHz Core i7, 16 GB ram) is extremely slow and crashes often. Activity monitor often shows applications using >100% of CPU capacity (e.g., OneDrive, Trader Workstation (which is a Java app), VMware Fusion). I'm starting to think that the problem is not so much with specific applications, but rather with the computer itself.

I'm using an external display (Dell U3415W, 34 inch, 3440x1440).

The EtreCheck report, which took over 5 minutes to run, is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I saw a number of items besides the DisplayLink software etresoft mentioned and I'm not sure if they are all going to be disabled in the new account or not. You appear to have installed Western Digital's drive software and unless your WD external drive is a NAS (network attached storage device) it isn't required. I'm not sure if the WD NAS requires software or not. You also have CrashPlan, One Drive, Malwarebytes, CCC, EaseUS, and DropBox which are all running in the background and potentially stealing cycles. I use a couple of these applications myself but not all of them.

As etresoft said, you have a lot of modifications running including TotalFinder, Bartender, Keyboard Maestro, and more, not to mention a long list of Internet and Safari extensions. I suspect that having created the new account and logged in that many if not most of your problems will disappear. After that it will be up to you to decide what you can live without.

It is not a question of what you use or don't use. If you are having problem, you need to isolate the cause. You can take the machine in to an Apple Store and have them diagnose it. There is no guarantee they will give you a replacement computer. Most likely, they will simply wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Then, if they can't find a problem, they will proclaim it fixed. But if you then just reinstall the same software on it, you could be back to square one. Or, even worse, Apple might actually replace your logic board with a refurbished one. Then you will be back to square one, possibly with someone else's flaky logic board.

That is why it is important to determine if software is the cause of the problem or if hardware is the cause. Apple doesn't waste any time diagnosing software. They wipe the machine, give you a refurbished logic board, and send you on your way. That may be the best solution.

However, if you don't have any problems while booted into another account, then the problem is most likely software. Get rid of your login items - all of them. They are easy to replace, if necessary. If that solves the problem, then you can start to reinstall them, one by one, until you have problems again. Then remove the one that caused the problem, and continue reinstalling the rest, one by one. It isn't going to be quick or easy. You can go the Apple route if you want. That will be quick and easy. And it will get rid of those login items, along with everything else.

Thanks again for the help. I've removed everything, and still have the same problems - very high CPU usage, battery life < 2-3 hours. What do you recommend as the next step - erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS? I use the computer for work, so I need to get up and running as quickly as possible, with the tools that I use on a daily basis.

You can certainly try that if you want. If this computer still under warranty? You might need to see about a rental computer for a while. Apple doesn't offer rentals. You will have to find a 3rd party.

Also, I apologize but I seem to have missed the kernel panics originally. You said it was working fine in another user account and I didn't double-check. This machine needs to be checked out by Apple.

Thanks, etresoft and dab for the quick responses. I created a new user account and ran a new EtreCheck report (below). I'm not running anything other than Safari so far, and I uninstalled Western Digital's drive software (but not until after I had run EtreCheck. So far, the computer does seem to be snappier.

EtreCheck version: 4.1.4 (4A203)

Report generated: 2018-04-03 15:20:11

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Thanks again for the help. I've removed everything, and still have the same problems - very high CPU usage, battery life < 2-3 hours. What do you recommend as the next step - erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS? I use the computer for work, so I need to get up and running as quickly as possible, with the tools that I use on a daily basis.

Hello Dudley,

You have an awfully large number of login items. Try to create a new user account on your machine and login under that account. Run a new EtreCheck report here. Your EtreCheck report on that system should run in under 3 minutes.

You also have a large number of system modifications. You have the DisplayLink software that will not work on 10.13.4, so don't try to update your operating system.

It could be a hardware problem, but in order to positively identify it as such, it would probably be necessary to wipe the machine and reinstall only the operating system.

That's good news. If you clean up your Login Items, you should be able to improve your performance. Login Items are easy to remove and to restore.

Anything listed under Login Items as "Application" can be disabled using System Preferences > Users & Groups > Your account > Login Items. You have your EtreCheck report. So if you ever want to restore any of those, you have the full path.

For anything in Login Items listed as "SMLoginItem" you will have to use the application itself to control whether or not it runs in the background. If you are unable to find any option within the app to disable the Login Item, you will have to delete the entire app.
