iTunes no longer shows current song playing indicator

Recently iTunes no longer shows the current song playing indicator on the left of the song list. It used to have a playing icon next to song name in playlists. Now the only place it has an indicator is in album view.

The thing is it seemed to just stop doing it and not related exactly to an iTunes update. As I checked and there hadn't been an iTunes update for a while when it happened. But its like this now on all my computers. I thought perhaps its a setting, but I can't find anything. I have tried making new users.

I can still see what the current song is by looking at the top of screen where the current song box is. However the indicator in playlists was very handy.

I haven't found any reference to this on the indicator. Has anyone else noticed it missing? Is it a setting, or is it something that was removed by Apple?

Current version of iTunes: 12.7.4, but it was happening before this very latest update.

Mac Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

What I am seeing in iTunes 12.7.4 is that the little speaker icon displays to the left of the track name only

in the playlist that was active when I hit Play
when that playlist is set to "View as > Songs"

If the playlist is set to "View as > Playlist" then I get this modified artwork with the speaker icon superimposed:

I haven't experimented with all the possible views. I'm pretty sure this behavior dates only from the 12.7.4 release.

Use Feedback - iTunes - Apple to let Apple know you want the old behaviour back.

This drives me batty. It does show the indicator over the mini-album art if you *hover* over the song that is playing but it no longer shows otherwise. So you basically have no idea where you are in a playlist.

This is one of Apple's flagship products in its canonical use case just completely failing...

Try playing something in the Browse section of Apple Music and there is no such indicator.

Interesting, so maybe it is some setting?

This is a screen shot, I've marked a red circle where the icon should (used to) be.

If I press Cmd+L this will just switch me to the Browse tab and in this case the exact same playlist. Also doesn't highlight the current track.

iTunes: 12.7.4.76

macOS: 10.13.4

Just returned for 6 free months from my mobile carrier and I'm having the same issue. No indicator for the song currently playing. *** Apple. This software is (still) a nightmare! At least there was an indicator for the current song the last time I've tried it.

This seems to be fixed! I'm on iTunes 12.7.5.9, but the weird thing is that I don't think it changed with an iTunes update. Maybe it was some metadata issue that they were able to fix on the server.

I see the little speaker icon in iTunes here. Not sure why you don't. 😕 Cmd+L will take you to the current track.

Ah, I was looking in the main library where for playlist there is an overlay on the active track. As you say it is missing from the Apple Music browse views.

Same here. Noticed this on iTunes 12.7.3 right after Sierra -> High Sierra upgrade few days ago so it may be High Sierra related.

Upgraded to 12.7.4 but the problem still persists.
