Broken USB C Port

Sometime last year I purchased a refurb MacBook direct from Apple, and also picked up Apple Care+, as I always do for all my Apple products. As it happens, sometime last week my wife was using the MacBook and attempted to plug in a lighting cable and promptly broke the port, rendering the machine useless.

As an Apple user for over 25 years, I didn't think much of it. Apple is generally pretty good with this sort of thing and I expected it to be covered under one of my warranties — except it wasn't. And the price I was quoted for a repair was close to $500.

Since I really don't want to spend $500 to fix a $1K laptop that I didn't even own for a year, I'm trying to explore other options. Has anyone here had a broken USB C port before, and either attempted to fix it themselves or used a third party for the repair? I don't want to invalidate my warranty, but I would like to salvage the laptop if possible.

Yes it has. Repair estimates for anything are generally higher than actuals. But there are no guarantees.

The USB-C port on the 12" MacBook is a replaceable part, and it is hard to imagine that replacing it would be $500.

If you get it repaired, I would definitely recommend having it done by Apple.
