I tried a different way as all apps were useless couldn't open settings or any other app or window.... the way I solved it was the following:
I pressed down on an app so it has the option to delete or move apps around... then I Pressed Volume up, Volume down and side bottom.... I was finally able to reboot the phone 😁
Hope this helps
[Step#1] Press volume up button (button #B1 of the top left ) and release it immediately, then [Step#2] press volume down button (button #B2) and release it immediately, and finally [Step#3] the screen lock button (button #B3 on the right side). Note however that button #B3 need not be released immediately.
A slow transition from Step#1 to Step#2 and then to Step#3 will not restart the iPhoneX. So if this approach isn't working for you then note that you are not moving from Step#1 to Step#2 and then to Step#3 fast enough.
This approach has been tested with ver.12.0.1
Same issue just happened with my son’s Xr. Phone locked up during a FaceTime call and continued to ring. No buttons or apps would work or respond....just constant FaceTime ringing (very annoying). We used the the quick up vol button/down volume then right button trick to power it down as this thread suggested as our solution
Press quickly the volume up, volume down, then keep the right button pressed until the phone turns off. It’s a way to hard reboot.
It wouldn’t let me open any apps. So I pressed the volume up button, volume down button, and then held the lock Button until I saw the Apple logo. It worked for me, good luck!
I was stuck like you were and did exactly what you suggested and it worked for me too. Very strange. Volume up, then volume down, then power and it gave me the option to shut down.
I have an iPhone X with Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile... It is not a service provider issues... It is definitely an iPhone issue because it happens to all three devices... I have had to turn the phones off one of either two ways.
1) Settings -> General -> Scroll to bottom and click Shut Down
2) Press and quickly release the Volume Up; then
Press and quickly release the Volume Down; then Hold the Right Button (Power Button) until the Apple Logo appears...
Here's what worked for me - I was able to delete the FaceTime app, though the call was still "in progress." I also turned on the flashlight and turned up the brightness on the screen, then I was able to force shut down with the side buttons.
Hi - so after calling customer support they told me to go into the store.
I let my phone drain itself out of battery naturally. After that, I plugged in my phone and it started to work fine.
I took the extra step of deleting the FaceTime app and then updating my OS. Then I d/l the FaceTime app. It's been fine since but I'm too scared to use FaceTime Audio -- which is what effed up my phone to begin with.
This might save you the trip and $$.
Thanks julia. I never knew about that setting. I instead reset my networks which in turn caused the phone to soft restart. The points against this was I lost all my saved wifi passwords ☹
I pressed the volume up button once, then volume down button once and then the power button and i managed to turn it off..
Hold down power and press the up volume for a couple of seconds then down volume a couple of seconds, then up volume. If you do that sequence, it will restart even if it seems locked up.
[Alternative Option ] Press the volume up button and without releasing it, continuously press the screen lock button until it gives you options to either power it off or make an emergency SOS.
Other options have been posted in earlier post, and include pressing volume up button, volume down button and screen lock button in a quick succession.
I tried the above- SETTINGS-GENERAL- scroll to the very bottom, SHUT DOWN. It successfully restarted my phone and was able to go on business as usual.
During the time it says “call ending”, you can’t make or receive calls, texts, etc. but luckily I could use Safari to pull up the answer! :)
