Airpods changing sound when on phone calls

My sound will be super slow and deep for a brief time - the person on the other side of the call says I sound like a chipmunk.

Hello Runfro,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are experiencing issues with sound when using your AirPods when on a phone call on your iPhone. To help with this issue, restart your device as iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on. Test your issue again, and if you're still having this issue, follow these steps on your AirPods and test your issue again.

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the icon next to your AirPods.1 Then tap Forget This Device.
  2. Put your AirPods in the case and close the lid. Wait 15 seconds, then open the lid.
  3. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until you see the status light flash amber a few times, then flash white.
  4. Place your AirPods close to your device. Follow the steps on your iOS device's screen.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I'm having the same issue as others. I've only noticed it when using a Bluetooth headset. I thought it was my headset since it is getting pretty old and the battery was running down quickly so I purchased another one. It just happened again with the new headset. The voices that I hear on my end are slow and garbled while the person on the other end of the phone hears very fast cartoon/chipmunk voices. Very irritating and unprofessional. Using an iPhone 7+ with a Plantronics Bluetooth M165 headset. No issues when using it with the car Bluetooth at this point.

I’m also experiencing the same fast/slow speech problem on my 6SP. It happens on almost every call using either AirPods or Bluetooth connection to my vehicle. I’m pretty sure it has occurred occasionally when not using any Bluetooth device, but have not confirmed that yet as I use Bluetooth devices most of the time.

The problem started shortly after an iOS update a few months ago and has continued after further updates, if anything it has become more frequent.

My carrier is AT&T. Can people on other carriers with this problem speak up so we can rule out something carrier specific?

I have been dealing with this for 6 to 8 weeks. This is a business line and use it all day long. This condition occurs with headset, car Bluetooth, regular phone and speaker phone. It even happened while on the phone with Verizon tech support. She was literally freaked out!

I have reset my phone to original, swapped into another phone with no change. Yesterday 6/14/18 was the worst day ever. 10 calls in a row and it happened. It doesn't matter if I'm moving or sitting still. I hear a click and then the person on the other end goes to slow motion sound. This is followed up with that person saying I sounded like Alvin the chipmunk. This was humorous for a day or so, but this is affecting my ability to communicate for work.

Apple please feel free contact me for any further questions.

Have had this same issue on 7+ Verizon for a couple of months.

1. Was told to turn off LTE for Voice. That didn't work

2. Was told to reset my iPhone and restore from backup. That didn't work

3. Was told to completely wipe my iPhone and set up as a new phone. That took an afternoon and didn't work

Issue happens both when using AirPods and when using iPhone headset for audio.

This is something in iOS that needs to be fixed.

This is AWFUL! If Apple doesn't chime in soon and fix this mess, I'm inclined to head to Androidland. SUPER-frustrating, as I use my iPhone7 and AirPods for work purposes. Been going on for months, and it's getting really old. Let's keep hammering Apple until they hear us. They need to stop acting like they don't know what's going on, as there are lots of links out there with people talking about it. So frustrated. Has anyone else gotten a better explanation from Apple yet?
