Airpods changing sound when on phone calls

My sound will be super slow and deep for a brief time - the person on the other side of the call says I sound like a chipmunk.

Hello Runfro,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are experiencing issues with sound when using your AirPods when on a phone call on your iPhone. To help with this issue, restart your device as iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on. Test your issue again, and if you're still having this issue, follow these steps on your AirPods and test your issue again.

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the icon next to your AirPods.1 Then tap Forget This Device.
  2. Put your AirPods in the case and close the lid. Wait 15 seconds, then open the lid.
  3. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until you see the status light flash amber a few times, then flash white.
  4. Place your AirPods close to your device. Follow the steps on your iOS device's screen.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

7+ airpods Verizon chipmunk slow issue on almost every call, so much so that I can't rely on it for business calls. I can't rely on my Apple phone for phone calls?? I am seeing numerous complaints over weeks and weeks without a word or input from Apple? disappointing to say the least. Just did update to 11.4.1 perhaps that will resolve. frustrated in case that wasn't obvious.

This issue is beyond simply the airpods and other Bluetooth devices as it happens to me when I am using the original wired headsets that came with the device since I got frustrated with airpods. It happens in my car bluetooth (mercedes 2017) and using my beats wireless headphones. I have tried the factory reset and reinstall and nothing has helped. I saw on another thread that it is a ios issue and perhaps is resolved with ios 12beta. I hope so as I travel for work and have to use my iphone for client calls.

Same issue. Time frame from when this all started is consistent with everyone else. I have a 7 plus with iOS 11.4.1. Doesn't matter if I am using the bluetooth in my Dodge Ram, my beatsX earbuds, or any other bluetooth headset. This is incredibly frustrating, as I need to use my wireless phone for conference calls for my job, but I am unable to due to this issue. It doesn't go unnoticed, and derails the meeting with all the comments and questions that ensue after it happens. It would be nice to get an acknowledgement from Apple on this issue, but that's not how these tech companies do business these days. It's always feign ignorance of the issue until a fix is included in an update, then sort of explain what is included in the fix, but make it ambiguous enough to keep the masses confused and in the dark. Wash, rinse, repeat. Grrr!! lol

I have this issue as well. Apple AirPods connected to iPhone 7 running iOS 11.4.1. Does not happen with car Bluetooth, or when connected to UE Boom Bluetooth speaker. Colleagues with newer phones like iPhone 8 or iPhone X do not appear to be experiencing this issue. Very frustrating and appears to occur about every 30 minutes on calls.
