How can I use Automator to automate tasks within Microsoft Excel for Mac?

I am basically doing a bunch of Find & Replaces within excel documents.

Each time I try using the "Watch me do" option and record my actions it comes back with the error "Application Excel is not running when it is expected to." I've tried launching the application with the correct file first and then do action within Excel but I get the same issue.

Thanks!

Automator's Watch Me Do feature is designed to increase frustration and coffee consumption. I already drink enough coffee, and do not use this Automator feature. Big promise, low reality.

Microsoft may include their own Automator actions from the Office 2016 for Mac installation. I don't have it so cannot check. If present among the Automator libraries, you will have to assess if they will allow you to achieve your Excel find/replace goal, or if you have to write custom AppleScript based on the Excel scripting dictionary support in the Apple Script Editor.

If you look at some of the prior, main topic posts here, you can see how others have coded AppleScript to address specific Excel issues.
