Out of the blue my AirPort Extreme started to have IP address issues. Multiple power cycles and resets have not helped. Tried renewing the dhcp lease. Still getting 169.254.129.12 as my ip address.

Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, you have not told us what device the AirPort Extreme might be connected to, but the normal cause of any 169.x.x.x IP address is a loss of Internet connection either because the modem is not operating correctly, or the Ethernet cable connecting the devices is defective.

A defective WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme is not likely, but is a possibility.

Please provide more details, things like.......

The make and model number of your modem

Whether the AirPort Extreme connects to this device using an Ethernet connection

Whether the 169.x.x.x IP address appears if you connect your Mac directly to the modem, bypassing the AirPort Extreme.

In other words, please assume that we know nothing about your network, so we will only know as much as you tell us.

If you are saying that you have connected your Mac directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable as a test, and the Mac does not receive a valid Internet connection, then it is very likely that the modem is defective.

Did you perform this test? If not, this would be the first troubleshooting step that you would want to perform.

If you could provide the model number of the modem ( a serial number is not required)....which sounds as if it is actually a modem/router or gateway, we will attempt to locate a setup guide or manual to learn more about the device.

In the end I made a call to Apple for help. We worked on it nearly 2 hours. Kudos to the support team.

Hard resets of the Airports ended up helping the most. They weren't assigning IP addresses to the devices in the house correctly. For some reason the extender was having unique issues with IP addresses.

It's not totally solved, still some intermittent issues, but much better than before.

A Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter would be a really handy item to have in your desk drawer for both troubleshooting and situations where you want to have a faster connection between your Mac and the AirPort Extreme.

Repeated Hard Resets on an AirPort router should never be needed if the device is functioning correctly.

Hard to know why Apple decided to remove the most important port in networking on their laptops. A guess would be styling.

Good luck!
