Office iPad linked to deceased staff member's email... bricked?

Our IT team gave me an old iPad that belonged to a team member who passed away suddenly a couple of years ago and hasn't been used since. I need it to use it with our new Ikan teleprompter and for social media management. Unfortunately the device is associated with his personal email address with the "find my iPad feature" activated, and I therefore have no way of restoring it to factory. Is this iPad just bricked without access to his email? There's no way I'm going to get in touch with his family and ask them to break into his personal accounts just so I can retrieve the password reset info.

Was it his or the corporation's?

Posts by Niel saying the original owner can take the device with the purchase receipt to an Apple Store and ask for it to be reset - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7511554?answerId=29990012022#29990012022 & https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8324671?answerId=33175357022#33175357022 "Or if you associated it with Apple Configurator, bypass the lock from there."

Additional note by Niel for corporate or educational devices: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7635428?answerId=30520452022#30520452022
