Trying to unlock my ipones?

I am trying to unlock my 2 iphones,

Tech with ATT told me to backup my phone to my ITunes account,

then restore my phones from the backup.

I am as mixed up as a Termite in a YOYO?

Detailed instructions would be very helpful.
