Mac Wake Up Screen Glitch

When I wake up my mac from sleep, the screen glitches and displays static, but it's only a flash (0.5 seconds). I've seen posts about this happening in macbook pro as well, after we've updated to High Sierra. I've seen examples about screens with weird colors, but in my case is just a greyish static. This lasts for only a few seconds.

A Troubleshooting Procedure that may Fix Problems with macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  3. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences.
  6. Start the computer in Safe Mode. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally.
  7. Use Apple Hardware Test to see if there is any hardware malfunction.
  8. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  9. Repair permissions on the Home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder.
  10. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  11. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update as needed.
  12. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  13. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

If none of the above helps then make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

Totally unacceptable... I sent my macbook into repair, they ran a diagnostics and tried replicating the "bug", but told me that nothing was wrong... I was able to replicate this screen glitch with more mac models, this is not something exclusively for my computer. In my work, I also have a macbook air, and a macbook pro, and this happened for both computers... I believe Apple should answer for this.

I too now have this issue....I believe it started with 10.13.3 and has continued into 10.13.5 on a MacBookPro, Retina 15" mid-2014. It is so frustrating that Apple is aware but unwilling to do anything about it or even talk about the issue. It is not an anomaly when so many are having the issue. Fix it Apple! I agree that every time I wake up my computer, I hold my breath when I see the static/snow, asking myself is this it? Will this be the time my computer stops working?

Right? I urge you to call in to Apple. Take video of it ( while you’re holding your breath) w your phone - and get to a supervisor at Apple who will send a link so you can send the attachment to engineers. But so far resetting SMC, PRAM, and entire OS has not worked. I’ve also read replacing logic board, screen and battery hasn’t either - so don’t send it in. But the more people who send in the video the more they’ll know it’s still a problem! Agh.

Is that a joke?

I don't have 3 hours to loose for a computer I bought 2k€ and I absolutely need for working.

Fix this issue this is not acceptable, there is either a hardware or a software issue.

For my concern it started around the beginning of this year or the end of last year.

I remember that Apple gave a software update to fix video card sooner (end of 2017?).

It may be related and creates more issues.

Stop playing with our patience for such pricy devices.

I have this same problem. My Mac 12" is on High Sierra 10.13.6. I took my Mac to the Apple store for repair. I was told its a High Sierra software issue that affects some computers, but not all, even if they are of the same model. They could not explain why my particular unit was affected by the issue when other Macs, different models and the same model also running High Sierra, were not. They told me that they cannot send computers afflicted with this problem for repair, and they were working on a fix. They could not tell me when the fix would be coming. Frankly, this was dissatisfying and disappointing. Apple should get out in front of this and give its customers information about how they will be resolving this. Instead, I'm uncertain when or if this will be fixed. Apple should be doing more for its customers unlucky enough to have gotten a unit that was vulnerable to this software issue.

So much for the warranty and paying a premium for a computer that "just works". If this isn't a defect, I'm not sure what is. Reading the material online about older Macs having this issue, this doesn't seem like a short term bug. It seems like a problem that spans several years that Apple hasn't resolved. Where is Apple support on this?

They told me no fix yet. And they couldn't tell me when there will be a fix. They told me that they were told not to accept laptops for repair because they didn't have a fix and there was nothing they could do. If I were you, I would go back and get a new machine if you still can. "Glitch" is being too generous. Its a recurring defect.

To provide more info, on my laptop, I had to go back four times. At first they insisted that it had to be a hardware problem. They replaced the top case. Then they said it might be File Vault encryption. Turned it off, didn't work. Then they replaced logic board and did a clean OS install. This past week, they told me that their techs concluded that its a problem in the OS (High Sierra) and that there is an internally issued memo not to take any more machines for repairs because they do not have a fix. They said that they're working on it but have no information about when there will be a fix. The genius guessed that it might be fixed in Mojave, but they don't know.

I did a Google search for "mac screen static when opening" and I found an article and reports of seemingly similar static problems almost every year as early as 2008. I don't know what this problem is, but it seems to be more than a one-time "glitch" with the current OS. Its been more than two weeks since the Apple store declined to fix my laptop and still no news. Apple should be doing more.
