Mac Wake Up Screen Glitch

When I wake up my mac from sleep, the screen glitches and displays static, but it's only a flash (0.5 seconds). I've seen posts about this happening in macbook pro as well, after we've updated to High Sierra. I've seen examples about screens with weird colors, but in my case is just a greyish static. This lasts for only a few seconds.

A Troubleshooting Procedure that may Fix Problems with macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  3. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences.
  6. Start the computer in Safe Mode. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally.
  7. Use Apple Hardware Test to see if there is any hardware malfunction.
  8. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  9. Repair permissions on the Home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder.
  10. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  11. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update as needed.
  12. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  13. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

If none of the above helps then make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

In addition to the momentary static screen, my MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) running 10.13.6 has the following on wake.

1 Open clamshell

2 begin to type in password

3 typing freezes after a few characters

4 close clamshell

5 if password was right, when you open it it's unlocked and running, mouse freezes in a moment

6 if not typing is available again to enter pw go back to 3

7 close and reopen clamshell

8 normal operation, ready to go, only took you two minutes to wake your computer Yay!

I have seriously had my Mac book pro 13 inch sent 4-5 times to “get fixed” and the problem is still there. Home with the static openin screen they say nothing wrong. I had it completely replaced and it’s still doing the same thing! Sooooo annoying, I also get a free screen when watching youtube, and a ticking noice as well as glitching with Netflix. I have no idea what to do anymore

Strangely... but good, the past week the computer seems to be working better.

I disabled Energy Settings -> Power Nap for both battery and AC two weeks ago. It didn't seem to change anything.

I'm still on 10.13.6, haven't added any software or removed anything in ages and faithfully restart at least once a week, usually because the computer doesn't want to connect to internet even though it shows it's connected to internet and the rest of my connected world is fine using it at the moment.

I have this same trending problem with my MBP 13"2016, Touch Bar, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports, flash storage, Retina display, running Mojave 10.14 that I purchased May 2017. This only started for me AFTER upgrading to Mojave. However, intermittently, the screen will be a grayish bars-and-lines similar to a small type grid paper. I have never seen any colors. I'll open it 5-8 times with no progress, but the mouse cursor always shows up as another white-ish block... Then will randomly open fine, and I can carry on.

The only thing that seems to help it is unplugging the power. Seems fairly quick to work after that.

I'm not a tech guy. So, hopefully this helps to some degree.

Best,

M.

I have a similar issue but it only happens after logging in. I can run the computer in safe mode and I can run my windows 10 boot camp without an issue but after I type in my password and hit enter I get the static and it just remains on screen making my computer useless. It’s a 2015 12” MacBook with Mojave installed on it.

Brought it to Apple and despite diagnostics saying no hardware has failed, they want to charge me $475 to replace the logic board even though they don’t know what’s wrong with it. Beyond frustrated.

Hi,

I just received my new MacBook Pro yesterday and have already seen this screen 3 times, in less than 24 hours. Thinking about returning it. Otherwise the computer works perfectly but my last MacBook, mid 2014 just completely crashed. Starting to question the longevity of Mac products and wondering if I should get a dell instead.

Otherwise the computer works perfectly but my last MacBook pro, (mid2014) just completely crashed. Starting to question the longevity of Mac products and wondering if I should get a dell instead. But can't deny that I love using Mac products and am not sure if I am ready to move to windows just yet.

The static screen on start up has stopped on my 2017 12" Mac. But other problems such as inconsistent keys and static screen on the secondary monitor when on first start (have to reconnect HDMI for static to stop), has taken away the allure of the Mac. Hard to move away from Mac because of things like iMessage, mail, air drop and Numbers unique to Mac, but disappointed in Apple's failure to maintain basic functionality -- they can't say it just works. For work, I've had to use the pre-2018 MacBook Air, and it had the static screen on start.
