Mixing: set all faders to zero

Logic 10.4.1 HS10.13.4 Saffire pro40

Hello people,

OK, i've got a good mix going. The vocal fader is at zero and the faders for everything else are set at varying values depending on the stereo image i'm looking for. (I also have volume automation on most tracks but that is beyond the point.)

I saw someone on Youtube suggesting that at this point -- when you are decently happy with the mix -- one should set all faders to zero while keeping their relative volume levels unchanged. The idea is that if you want to lightly tweak a bunch of individual fader settings, say by 1db, they will all respond similarly -- whereas if they vary greatly -- let's say the vocal is at 0 and a mandolin is at -20, they will respond differently to the same -1db level change.

My question: is this normal and best practise and how is this done again (can't find the info)?

Hoping i'm clear enough.

Hello Edgar and thanks for your reply.

My question was lacking in precision but i think your answer regarding vca faders is pointing me in the right direction.

I must say that i have not been using that option but will check it out.

Regarding the original question -- it was more a case of re-calibrating the meters following a rough mix-- but i'm going to drop that avenue and explore the VCA options.

Merci

That statement is mutually exclusive. If you set all faders to zero, then you will change their relative volume.

A common practice at the beginning of you mix is to set all your Volume Faders to 0dB (Unity Gain) and adjust the signal on each channel with a Gain Plugin (or offset the Audio Region Gain). This has the advantage that any kind of level adjustments on the Fader gives you the highest Fader resolution (movement/distance vs. level change). For example, making a small level adjustment at the 0dB position is much more precise than if the Fader is positioned at -20dB or even lower.

However, if you are way into your mix and have a situation where some Faders are way down and have automation, then you can utilize VCA Groups to make fine adjustments, and you can even automate VCA Faders.

Hope that helps
