what's "system information.app"?

what's "system information.app"?... and can i trust it?

out of the blue i am getting this question, "system information.app" would like to access your contacts. OK / Don't Allow? I am using MacOS High Sierra 10.13.3 on a MacBook Air.

looks like it's from the OS, but there is no useful information by clicking the little "i" (as usual?), so it could be a virus for what i know. Does anyone know? or experienced that in a specific context?
