iTunes disconnects before sync/iPod(s)

Have been on what is becoming a nightmarish adventure with itunes and my 2 ipod classics. Initial issue concerned itunes freezing immediately when ipod connected. Problem arose after last update, v. 12.7.4.76. I eventually rolled back to v.12.7.3.46, the last version to work.

Doing so solved the 'freeze' problem but has created current issue being: ipod disconnects before I'm able to sync. As specifically as I can, it goes like this:

open itunes to sync

connect ipod

ipod flashes 'connected' screen, then flashes 'syncronizing'

ipod icon appears in upper left under account menu

click ipod icon to...

enter summary window - simultaneously to entering summary page, ipod goes into 'safe to remove' mode

Result? No sync

Itunes recognizes both ipods. It reads data volumes correctly and then immediately disconnects

FYI-

with itunes open, ipod connected but unconnected per itunes, things look like this;

in Device Mgr, USB controllers, Apple Mobile Device driver read clean

the driver for Mass Storage Device is flagged as 'windows uninstalling this device' (code 21)

the flag only appears when the above premature disconnect occurs

file explorer does not see connected ipod

with itunes closed and ipod connected

no issues is Device Mgr, Apple Mobile Device & Mass Storage Device drivers are clean

file explorer sees ipod and reads data volumes correctly

So, I guess my question is; where is the culprit? I'm assuming it's itunes....the issues above occur with both ipods.

Any idea's or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hey tt2,

I thought I would let you know I just synced both my iPods without a hitch. It seems the mystery glitch has been solved and I can't believe how mundane the cause was. With the iPod connected and in the sync window, under Settings/Music pane, the sync music box was not checked!! Unbelievable!! Not checked!!! I don't think I have ever....EVER!!!, even clicked on the Settings/Music pane, or any of those summary options. I'm dumbfounded how that box was not checked! I've only ever concerned myself with settings in the iTunes 'preferences' to set up what was synced......and it always worked. It seems redundant to go through the 'preferences' setup only to have to go one step further with with same instructions with the iPod connected Settings/Music pane. Does my gripe make sense? And how....did the box become unchecked? The Russians?

Anyway, after a month of aggravation and trying in vain, every possible solution, it was that simple box.

I must thank you for the help you provide. Don't know if it's thankless yeoman's work or not, but it's appreciated in this precinct.
