Portrait mode pictures turn into regular pictures

Is perhaps iCloud Photo Library enabled on your iPhone? If yes, is the "Optimize Storage" option enabled?

Then the portrait effect originals may have been removed from the iPhone and replaced by optimized versions without depth map, if more space is needed.

Sorry, not sure what you mean when you indicate that you have to edit the photos to make them portrait. There is no edit that can do that since Portrait Mode has to do with depth of field, which is not something that you can create after the photo has been taken: Use Portrait mode on your iPhone - Apple Support

OK, I understand now.

Since I have not seen other posts regarding this issue, it doesn't sound like it is an iOS issue. I would recommend that you try resetting your device as follows:

Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

I started facing this issue all of sudden and not because of latest update. I'm using 7plus. I thought latest update might fix this and it didn't. Editing regular photos to portrait again is a very frustrating experience.

I have been having this issue as well. I just got my iPhone X a few days ago and noticed the very next day that my portrait-mode photos were reverting to normal I chatted with Apple support and they told me to reset to factory settings, but nothing changed. I'm updating to the 11.4 software version now--has anyone had this issue with the new software update?

I’m facing the same issue ... last week I took tons of pictures slomos videos etc and most of the pictures were taken in portrait mode. All of those have disappeared or moved back to normal mode. Now I’m confused as to which pics were taken in normal mode and which were taken in portrait mode. I’m facing this issue for the past 2 months I’ve rebooted the phone several times still of no use. This feature is useless if not have it fixed from the developers

I spent a long time on the phone with Apple the other day about this issue. She reassured me that the engineers are aware of the issue and are working to fix it. She did say, however, that the only remedy would be waiting for the next update to come out, (11.4.1 or whatever it will be called). Hopefully they get it fixed quickly.

Oh my thank you soooo much for this thread! I was actually the very first person to complain to Apple about this problem months ago when I called them and they never ever heard of the problem! So after futile attempts and no one figured out what was going on I was left clueless and decided to turn my phone off then back on and it resolved the problem....for a while. I have since updated the software to the latest version. For god sake this morning the problem started again!! And turning off my phone doesn’t work this time. So I’m so glad other people have recognised this problem and Apple finally acknowledged the issue.

Oh and also does anyone have this particular issue when the portrait effect turns itself off the next day, for me it only affects photos after a certain date. For example I’ve been travelling in Iceland for 4 days. When the problem started this morning it only affected the photos from the last 2 days. The portrait mode photos from before that are all perfectly fine and still on.

I had the same problem happen to me about a month ago. I reset my phone to a previous backup from earlier in the year (before I had this issue) and it fixed it but only temporarily cause it started happening again just now! I tried contacting Apple about it at the time and they had never heard of this problem back then. Hopefully the more people that bring it forward the more likely they’ll have a fix! Glad to see now others have noticed it too and it wasn’t just me!

I have been having the same problem since the end of April. It is absolutely ridiculous that they have brought out updates since but no fix for this problem! This is the main reason i bought this phone and it’s really frustrating and frankly, not happy having forked out £1k on a phone! Please fix ASAP!

Has this problem been solved? I see the traits has been here since june and i just faced the problem. I was confused when all the pictures that i took changed immediately to normal mode. I did tried rebooting the phone but it doesn’t fix it. How do i restore it back to potrait mode? Whats the point of me buying this iphone X when all the pictures turned to normal. This is annoying. I hope apple can fix this asap.
