Music playback stutters since update

I have an iPhone 6 which just updated to the latest iOS. Ever since, my music playback will sometimes pause and then restart with stuttering. The only way to stop it is to restart the phone. Anyone else have this issue or know of a good fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 11.3, null

I had this same problem with both iTunes and Amazon music. What I have found that fixes this problem is to turn off Wifi (settings>Wi-Fi>off), then turn off "use cellular data" under iTunes & App store in settings (settings>iTunes & App Stores> Use Cellular data> off). Most likely the iphone is sending back information to the iTunes server and this communication is prioritized over iTunes music playback on the phone. Thus the phone is consuming most of its resources communicating with the network. Apple should prioritize music playback over background processes and this will fix the problem.

Hey tomzero,

Thanks for doing those steps. To access music in your library when no service is available, you must download to your iCloud Music Library.

Let's confirm these steps are done with the music you're having trouble with:

Add and download music, shows, and movies from the Apple Music catalog - Apple Support

How to download content to listen to offline

Before you can download content to listen to offline, you need to add it to your Library. Then, in the Music app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch; in iTunes on your Mac or PC; or in the Apple Music app on your Android phone, find the item that you want to download, and follow these steps:

  • On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android phone: Tap Download User uploaded file .
  • On your Mac or PC: Click Download User uploaded file .

You'll see User uploaded file when the download is complete.

If you have Automatic Downloads turned on, content automatically downloads to your device or computer when you add it to your Library. You won't see User uploaded file or User uploaded file .

I find this issue happens when I have the phone in my pocket sitting vertically while I walk. It generally also happens if I switch apps while listening to music, both downloaded or streaming. If I have the phone playing music in my car, the phone sits horizontally in the centre console. NO issues when horizontal. Only when vertical. Perhaps some interference with accelerometer or gyro. Even though I may get the typical music cut out before the stuttering starts when vertical, the cutout can happen occasionally horizontally, but no stutters will follow. Tempted to upgrade to iOS12 beta to get rid of this most annoying of bugs!

I’m having the same problem. I use audiable a thought it was just this app, but I recently put all my music on iTunes back onto my iPhone 7 and same issue... stutters and skips through tracks.

This happens with purchased tracks and tracks that I have ripped from old CD’s or vinyl I have converted at high bittates.

Very, very annoying that no fix has been made for such a critical issue in what should be Apple strong point.

Beginning to consider moving to Android after many years of supporting Apple products for what should. be their robust architecture.

Unfortunately, this didn't work. The problem is intermittent and didn't happen for a few days, but it's back.

This happens most often when I'm commuting and have no access to wi-fi or cell reception. I tried turning off wi-fi and bluetooth anyway to see if it would fix the problem, but it didn't.

In addition, when I turn the iPhone screen off and go back to music later, it will often take me back to the main page. For example, if I'm listening to a particular release, when I turn off the screen, I'll see the song titles. When I go back to the music app later, sometimes it takes me back to the main screen where I have to reselect 'downloaded music' and then 'artist'. Not sure if that's related or not.

Hey tomzero,

I understand you're having issues with your Apple Music app. I'd love to assist you with that.

I want us to try some steps with your iPhone to test. First, let's test on cellular and Wi-Fi to see if the issue is resolved using either connection:

Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Control Center with iOS 11 - Apple Support

Disconnect from Wi-Fi networks

Open Control Center and tap User uploaded file. The icon will dim and your device will disconnect from any network that you're connected to.

While Wi-Fi is disabled, auto-join for any nearby Wi-Fi networks will also be disabled until:

  • You turn on Wi-Fi in Control Center.
  • You connect to a Wi-Fi network in Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • You walk or drive to a new location.
  • It's 5 AM local time.
  • You restart your device.
Let us know how that goes!

Cheers!

On iPhone 6 Plus / iOS 11.3 / 7GB Free space. Problem presents when streaming iTune Music in Music App AND in USB Disk SE App (playing local .WAV files):

Also having a stuttering problem - seemed to present in iOS 11.2.6 but particularly in 11.3. Switching network connections from Wi-Fi to broadband didn't help in my situation (i've operated in weak signal conditions before with no stuttering in ). A General Reset hasn't helped either. Seems to come and go...
