Network printer is not responding

I have a new MacBook Pro with OS X 10.13.2 (High Sierra, working to ISP provided router, with no connection to printers, plus 2 printers & a scanner (all old, working with old Macbook as well). All work fine tested direct, with USB cable connectors to the USB thunderbolt-3 with the multi adapter.

However, to benefit from wireless printing, I use another router (Vigor 2600G) off-line, as a print server, with USB cable connected from the router.

Having installed the main printer with LDP to 192.168.1.1 (router off-line), I get the "Network printer is not responding" message. Monitored (1) via the sys pref | printers & scanners screen, which shows "in use" for a while, and (2) dock icon & splash screen - showing printing, then the error message).

EPSON-EPL 5900 laser, with appropriate driver from Gutenprint, v5.2.13 . The old MacBook (under OS X 10.6.8, with Gutenburg v5.2.3) works well, to check.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.2), router, print server
