Snow on screen when waking up MacBook PRO TB

I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch, 2016 with touch bar running macOS HighSierra (10.13.4). It has the Intel Iris Graphics 550. For the last week I have been noticing that when the screen wakes it will show colored snow on the screen. This will last about 1-2 second and then will go to the log in screen. I did search about this but there were no reports that I saw since 2013 and there was the suggestion that this represents a video chip that is going out. Are there any suggestions?

I tried resetting NVRAM (seemed to make the most sense from the recommended options) and it has been about a day since this was done. So far I have not seen the colored snow again.

Your help was greatly appreciated.

As stated previously, I decided to take my computer in for diagnostics and repair. They were not able to reproduce the issue nor did they see any issues with the initial diagnostics. They decided to send it in for screen replacement, which was done and have not had the issue reappear over the last 5 days.

I believed that it was a screen issue given that I would perform screen capture while the snow was present, but when I looked at the image that was saved it would always show the log in screen. The two individuals that were present when I brought it in felt that this was consistent with screen malfunction. The repair was rapid and have had no further issues.

Hello DryDoc,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are having issues with a video anomaly when waking up your MacBook Pro. To help with this issue, please follow relevant troubleshooting and isolation steps from this Apple resource on your situation, like resetting the SMC and NVRAM, and testing the issue in a new user account and while started up into safe mode.

I took my computer in to the Apple store. They did some testing and said it was either the screen or software. Given that this began several months ago I suspect the former. When I get the snow on the screen I have done screen shots (while snow still visible), but when I see the image of the screen capture it is the log in screen. There shouldn’t be any non-Apple software/drivers running prior to login. They decided to send to the shop to have the screen replaced. An unrelated issue that involves the letter “E” no longer being visible on the E-key. They will have this replaced as well. I am told that I should have some report in about 3 days.
