When I started up my Mac Mini yesterday a snowflake appeared on the screen with the options, sleep, restart & shut down. Why? It was cool, but certainly not below 62 degrees in the house. Once I clicked restart, it seemed to start up fine.

Thanks! You are absolutely correct that those options were checked. The odd thing is that it's never done that before & I haven't made any changes at all to the system. But you have solved one mystery. Thanks!!!
Go to System Preferences/Users & Groups, select your account, and click Login Options. Is the box checked for Show the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons?
