Safari 11.1 blocking Java/changing preferences doesn't work

I utilize a database for work that runs on Java. In the past with Apple updates I have been able to alter the security or website preferences in Safari to allow Java to run and turn off "run in safe mode". I also turn off pop-up blockers and clear the history/cache/cookies and reopen a new Safari browser. Up until this latest update this has worked. Now I have people at work who have updated and are running High Sierra with Safari 11.1 and these changes are no longer working. Java is being blocked. I have also checked the Java console to make sure the settings there are correct and the exception site list is correct. I am not getting any sort of error message. Is there a different method to stop Java from being blocked in Safari 11.1?

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

I was able to solve my own question from another older post someone found. I've copied that here should anyone else have this same issue and use this thread to find the solution.

one of our techs found a work around. might be useful for those of you who, you know, need to work.

1. enable developer mode in preferences (preferences > advanced > show develop menu in the menu bar)

2. when you're on the page that you need to launch the java applet, mimic ie11.

develop > user agent > internet explorer 11

you may still need to go in to the plugins area to allow the java plugin on the specific site you wish to use, but you'd probably already done this in safari 10.
