I can not sign in to iCloud on my iMac. Help! Thanks!

I can not sign in to iCloud. I get this message on my Mac "This Mac can not connect to iCloud bc of a problem with" my apple id. "Open iCloud preferences to fix this problem." I open preferences, change my password, get the same message again and still can not sign in. I have system 10.11.6. This message keeps popping up on the screen. How can I fix this? Thanks!

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

What to do after you change your Apple ID or password - Apple Support

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Also try the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode - About

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Etrecheck – System Information

It did work in Safe mode. I also cleaned up the orphan files cited in the etrecheck report and rebooted. Everything seems to be back to normal now. The new iCloud password works on all my devices. I can now access my photos, contacts, etc in iCloud from the iMac. I guess it's possible that my vintage iMac from 2009 was having a moment. Thanks again for your assistance!
