Kernal_task running at over 200%, sometimes over 450% of CPU and seems to be causing a huge lag

Hi all,

My Mac (running 10.13.3) has recently become EXTREMELY slow with a huge lag that is driving me insane. Even doing simple tasks like scrolling and moving tabs is nearly impossible. I've opened up Utilities and have discovered that the kernal_task process is running at over 200%, sometimes as much as 450%, with the next process taking up barely 20%. I was wondering if it was a storage problem, but I've cleared the caches, and there is over 450GB on my main hard drive, so I don't think that's the issue.

I've tried going on to Youtube to see if there's a fix for this, but it looks like the solutions are all at least a few version back, so I'm wondering if anyone here can help me out. I'm in the process of running Etrecheck so I'll hopefully get something to post here.

Hope to hear back from someone soon.

Regards,

Doug

Hello DiverDoug70,

I'm sorry, but we can't take your word for that. Can you post another EtreCheck report? Sophos includes kernel extensions and those are possibly what is causing the problem. Software that makes low-level system modifications like this is very difficult to uninstall. It requires a dedicated uninstaller. But many Mac users aren't aware of these difficulties and just drag one component to the trash. All they have done is put that low-level system modification into an undefined state where it could potentially misbehave even more now that part of it is gone.

You may very well know all about that and have run the correct uninstallation procedure. But there is no way for us to tell, so I have to assume that you haven't until proven otherwise.

If the system still has problems after Sophos is completely removed, then remove the other kernel extensions. Again, the same rules apply. Only use vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Never try to delete files in hidden directories by hand. Never use an "app zapper".

If you have removed all kernel extension and the problem remains, then it could be a more serious problem as described here: If kernel_task is using a large percentage of your Mac CPU - Apple Support

Unfortunately, there is no way to definitively prove it is a hardware issue while you have kernel extensions installed. You said the problem only started recently. It looks like you only installed Sophos recently too. Plus Sophos has crashed numerous times. I think there is a good chance the problem is just Sophos and your machine is fine.

Hello again DiverDoug70,

Unfortunately, your new EtreCheck report still shows a very slow runtime. You could try unplugging those external drives and see if it improves. EtreCheck calls some lower-level Apple utilites that may take longer to run if you have lots of drives mounted.

I think that a hardware failure is the most likely explanation. You can wait and see if you get heavy kernel_task usage again. But your machine is still running slower than it should. I suggest taking the machine to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Centre for diagnostics.

Apr 14, 2018 8:48 PM in response to DiverDoug70

here's my EtreCheck report:

(funny thing is that since I ran the report, kernal_task has gone down to around 2%...then 10 mins later went back up to 250%...huh???)

EtreCheck version: 4.2.1 (4C020)

Report generated: 2018-04-15 13:21:51

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 25:19

Performance: Poor

Problem: Computer is too slow

Description:

Huge lag with trying to do basic tasks like scrolling on Chrome web browser, moving tabs from one side of the screen to the other, etc.

The kernal_task is running at least 200%, sometimes more than 450% and I think this is the problem here.

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Time Machine backup out-of-date - The last Time Machine backup is over 10 days old.

Poor performance - EtreCheck report took over 10 minutes to run. This is very unusual.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Time Machine auto backup disabled - Time Machine auto backups are disabled.

Apps crashing - There have been numerous app crashes.

Small backup drive - Time Machine backup drive is too small.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

thanks, Kappy.

Will look into doing this as well. I figured there had to be something running in the background, but other than NordVPN, I haven't installed any app recently.

I'll also look into resetting my SMC as well (hard to think that that's just a matter of shutting down, unpluggin the cord for 15 secs or more, then restarting. Good ol' modern technology! ;-) )

Regards,

Doug

I reset the SMC as well. It brought down the kernal_task to around 10%, but after about 10 mins, it went back up again to over 200% (even saw it as high as 980% !!!)

I've tried shutting down other apps, but it doesn't look like anything else is taking up much of the CPU. Here's a screengrab of my Activity Monitor:

This is really starting to get frustrating!
