Question

Boot disks in RAID0 update issue

Cannot perform Software Update, since I have two M2 SSDs in RAID0 as a System Disk. Why does not support Apple connected SSDs in RAID as Boot Disk?

Mac Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.2)

You cannot install macOS on a RAID. However, you can clone an existing bootable disk to the RAID, and that system will boot the computer. Note that using RAID arrays as a startup disk is not recommended. RAIDs are intended for use as storage or backups. It would be wise to use only one of those SSDs as a boot disk.

I actually did it. Installed a brand new High Sierra onto RAID0. Why? I/O speed is double, than using a single SSD, which is important to me. Wise or dumb thing to use RAID is not a question. I always used RAID in my Macs, and I never had issues with them. If it is possible to install MacOS, I dont know, why Apple Software Update CAN NOT UPDATE it to the latest MacOS. Stupid limitations again...

My problem is, that MacOS installer let me install onto RAID without any warning about any limitatons. Limitations came only, when tried to update 10.13.2 to 10.13.3 or 10.13.4. This is strange and I still need solution for that.

And, can you give some detail about what happened when you attempted the updates? From where were you initiating the updates? The updaters should have been around 2GBs. Are you sure you had the right files downloaded?

I have tried several times, but same result. I think this is an issue, and Apple will fix it later in the upcoming macOS update. I did it, as usual. Software update -> Restart -> Progress bar moved slowly in about 26 minutes, and then nothing. I am a little bit frustrated, but I can solve it "Windows way 🙂" by cloning drive and re-cloning after update.

Usually, there are good reasons behind such limitations that you either don't know or prefer to ignore. I have no solution for that.
