is MacCleaner.pkg safe?

I got a pop up virus alert while on the web saying I have 2 viruses. It's from MacCleaner.pkg - is this sage? Now it is in my downloads - if I don't need it how do I get rid of it? I'm a new Mac user!

The virus alert thing is almost always a scam to try to get you to buy. Almost anything on a Mac with the word cleaner in it will cause more issues than it resolves. I would delete it and if you have any further issues with it, use the following. It has a very good reputation. Free Cyber Security & Anti-Malware Software | Malwarebytes

I have just come across the same thing. There was a beep, and a new window opened in Safari referring to viruses and malware and saying that my Mac was infected. The window looked just like these pages, with the same black banner as appears at the top of this page and with the "Apple Care products" logo. Clicking anywhere on the banner resulted in MacCleaner.pkg being downloaded. I cleared the downloads. I also searched in "Finder" for maccleaner.pkg and located a file (I didn't note where it was) which, on basis on the comments in this conversation, I sent to trash. Strange thing though - even though I only downloaded today, the file is recorded as having been modified on 18th April, i.e. last month.
