I cannot open app store on macbook air

I cannot open the App Store on my MacBook Air, (2014, 11-inch). I have tried most every recommendation listed on previous community recommendations to no avail. I'm currently using the OSX 10.9.5 operating system, but cannot update the OS since the App Store won't open up. I've deleted the com.apple.appstore.plist in the library folder, reset the computer and still cannot open the App Store.

If you can't connect to the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or App Store - Apple Support

Probably you have tried them, though.
