can ping, but no internet services

I've lost internet connection on my MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010, 2.66 GHz, High Sierra 10.13.4. From the Terminal, I can ping both IP addresses and domain names over two different WiFi networks (home & work), but Mail, several browsers, Dropbox, etc., don't connect to the Internet. I noticed the problem Monday, things were working fine last week, and I haven't done any upgrades or installations (that I know of) in the past week. Yesterday I did a System Recovery from my Time Capsule from 10 days ago, thinking it was some recent update to some app or system file, but the problem persists. I've searched the web for similar problems, but none of the solutions I found apply (most were WiFi or DNS issues). Any ideas?

The most common settings are to have all unchecked (except possibly "Use Passive FTP Mode", but that is irrelevant to your present problem).

As jjkraw said, comparing to the settings you have on Ethernet is a good idea.

You don't make clear in the OP that this was a ethernet connection. Port definition is redefine with each restart of the machine. You can try running the AHT http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 Not definitive by any means, but may kick out an error code.

I had a 2010 MBP that had a faulty ethernet port. WiFi worked fine.

In System Preferences->Network, does the Wifi show with a green dot?

Does it say it has a self-assigned IP, or does it say it is connected to a specific network with an IP address?

Is it configured to use DHCP?

If you select it, and click Advanced, what do you see under TCP/IP and under DNS?

Following the AHT instructions, I held down the D key at startup and got an message saying Internet Recovery Starting, then, under the world icon, it came up app.com/support -3403D. After that I had to restart from the power button.

Wait, huh?, no, all the problems I described were with a WiFi connection. I then added that when I plug the MacBook directly into an ethernet port in the back of the WiFi router that the connection problems went away.

Yes, green dot.

It is configured for DHCP. I don't see anything about "self-assigned IP". It does give the name the WiFi device and my current IP.

TCP/IP is set to Using DHCP. It gives my IPv4 address, the subnet mask and the Router address

DNS are the IPs I've manually set. They've been working for the past 6 months. It doesn't seem to matter what DNS I use, 8.8.8.8, etc., they all work (with ping from Terminal).

The Wireless Diagnostics look normal, nothing I haven't seen before.

I have run a sysdiagnose (shift, ctrl, opt, cmd, .<=period>) and have that file, but I'm not sure what to look for in there; it's dense.

Do you by any chance have any proxy configured? That might cause this. Just as for checking DNS, clicking on "Advanced", there is a "Proxies" button. Normally there is no proxy set, but a bad web proxy may cause the web connections to fail.

In Proxies I have the Auto Proxy Discovery checked. Then in the Bypass proxy settings... box there is

*.local, 169.254/16

I don't know what that means.

Use Passive FTP Mode is checked.

Okay! That did it, almost. Yes, Ethernet Proxies (in Advanced) had nothing checked, so I unchecked that for WiFi (I had previously thought Auto Proxy Discovery was on by default). But it still didn't work, so I then removed all DNS IP addresses except for the default 192.168.2.1. And, oh look, so many emails.....

But what I can't figure out, and what hung me up for so long, is that those Network settings that prevented Internet connections had been in place for some time. The DNS addresses are what I changed most recently (a few weeks back), but they were working for a while; then pffft! Well, all's well that ends well. Thanks again folks!

UPDATE: I have Internet services when I plug an Ethernet cable into the WiFi router, so the problem is isolated to connecting to Internet through WiFi. I do have a good WiFi signal.

Have you tried Wireless Diagnostics? Hold down the Option key and click on the WiFi icon in the menu bar. Select "Open Wireless Diagnostics...". See if it comes up with any ideas.

By "went away" I mean I have internet service only while on ethernet; when unplugged from ethernet I still have no internet service over WiFi.
