Notification on Messages won't go away

My messages app on my MacBook shows 1 unread message, despite me 'reading' it several times, restarting my MacBook, Force Quitting the Dock and changing the Recent Items to 20. My iPhone and iPad show no unread messages.

Any other suggestions?

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

Hi,

Second method.

With Messages Open go to System Preferences > Notifications and turn them Off for Messages (None).

Quit Messages.

Restart Messages and restart Notifications.

If that does not work Restart the computer between the Quit or Messages and the restart.

If that does not work do this

Ralph,

Thank you.

RE: With Messages Open go to System Preferences > Notifications and turn them Off for Messages (None).

Quit Messages. Restart Messages and restart Notifications.

No change

RE: Restart the computer between the Quit or Messages and the restart.

I don't understand what you're asking me to do here. "between the Quit or Messages"

RE" If that does not work do this https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT203538. Step 7 - Will this change my permissions? When I restored my computer a couple months ago, Apple Care had to set up some special permissions to merge my accounts. Though it only shows one account for me now.

Appreciate your support,

Brenda

Ralph,

Thank you for your reply.

None of your suggestions has worked for me.

The only thing that I have not done yet is this:

  1. When the progress bar completes, open the Terminal app, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  2. Paste or type this command in Terminal, then press Return:
    diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`
  3. When the process completes, quit Terminal.

I am concerned about messing up my permissions after it took Apple Care so long to fix them. As you probably know, during the process of restoring a MacBook from a backup, it creates 2 users. In my case - it created 3 because it crashed during the restore process. Simply setting permissions wasn't working and she had to do something else to fix the problem.

I guess this is a glitch that may never be fixed. Oh well.

Thanks for trying.

Brenda

Hi,

Repairing Permissions used to be part of the things Disk Utility could do for you.

However this type of Repair was to all the other files not in Users Folders.

This Document shows how to do it for a Mac User Account.

If you are not sure, contact Apple Care again and have them take you through it.

Hi,

As iMessages is not yet part of iCloud then signing in and out does nothing

User uploaded file

The iMessages account needs an Apple ID that is iCloud valid.

The iMessages server does check that against the Apple ID database but it is a set of Standalone servers.

You can use a different iCloud Valid Apple ID in iMessages if you wished, the same way you can so so in iTunes.

You could go as far as using different ones in the App Store and iTunes and using different money "pots" so to speak.

Hi,

the first instruction set was to leave the computer running whilst trying the process.

If it did not work I was suggesting:-

With Messages Open go to System Preferences > Notifications and turn them Off for Messages (None).

Quit Messages

Then Shut the computer down

Then:-

Restart Messages and restart Notifications

I do seem to have written rubbish in explaining that bit. Not sure why I wrote "or" instead of Restarting Messages (and Notifications).

The Link Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder - Apple Support

will reset the Permissions of all the files in your Home Folder. (the one that has the Little House icon).

All the files in this Folder are supposed to be Owned by you as the account Holder and you should have Read and Write Permissions.

The Step 5 should also change the Permissions by the Apply to Enclosed bit bit this often does work for all the files.

The Terminal Command is more certain of doing so.

The Document is an Apple issued one.

Merging two Mac Users on a Computer can be done and should involve making the Owner of some files the same as the Account you are moving the Files into. The Read and Write Permission would also need to be done.

Whilst the process would have been similar it may not have involved all the files from one of the Mac User Accounts.

That said a small number will tend to lose Permissions in the normal course of things.

It is only when things don't work as they should that you might need to resort to this method in the linked Document.
