I put some classical music on a USB drive to play in my car. On several tracks the volume is very low and I have to increase the volume significantly. Other tracks play at the normal volume. Is there any way of equalising the volumes?

Check the specs on your player. It may have a capability to normalize volumes on playback, equivalent to the iTunes Sound Check.
If you actually want to normalize the files before copying to the USB stick, you can use a 3rd party tool such as iVolume:

Classical music is the worst kind of car music. The volumes vary greatly within a piece and even if you normalize it you may still find yourself reaching for the volume knob all the time unless you also compress it (which will get you lynched by other classical aficionados).

Thank you for your help and advice. In spite of the feelings of the aficionados I would prefer to hear the music and I do not drive a Rolls Royce so I need the soft tracks a little louder.
