Hello Dgoober2,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding your MacBook Air built-in trackpad isn't responding, however a USB mouse works without issue. I've got a couple of steps that can help with this issue.

First, try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac. Please review the information and steps in the link below:
How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If the issue persists, reset NVRAM using the following link:

Let us know the results. Please include any other troubleshooting steps you may have tried.

Have a great day!

Hi, thank you so much for the help.

I reset SMC as per instructions - didn’t work

I reset NVRAM as per instructions - on start up the screen got to a picture of a bluetooth apple wireless mouse and indicated i should turn it on (presumably as it did not detect the trackpad?) as the trackapd is not working I did try an apple mouse I have but it didnt’ work. I plugged in teh USB mouse and that didn’t work. I was able to advance to the next screen using tab and enter On the keyboard but that took me to the mac os utilities option and there I was trapped as I had no mouse to click contine and it simply would not recognise enter to proceed. In the end I had to power off.

Anything else I can try?

thanks again.
