iMac doesn't complete startup

iMac doesn't complete startup. After the Apple logo appears, the progress bar gets to a certain point then the whole screen goes black. Have tried reseting system management controller and PRAM and also holding down the shift key.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), MacBook Pro 15, Mac Pro, 500 MB SSD

iMac startup hangs at Apple screen, no progress bar On restart, my iMac cannot get past the gray Apple logo screen, with no progress bar showing. I restarted it in Recovery mode and ran first aid in disk utility. It checked out okay. I tried to restart again...same problem. Any suggestions?
