Selecting a unique messages recipient.

In the iOS message app, and I assume in Mac OS as well, when I type in the beginning of a recipient’s name which is unique in my contacts list, I still have to select the name from the offered “list” of one contact.

If the contact has been identified as the only possible match, why isn’t it simply automatically selected and entered in the recipient field? I have a group discussion going that is my overwhelmingly most frequent recipient, and I’ve called it “aaa”. When I type in “aaa” it is the only possible match, yet I still have to confirm the selection from a list of one option. Why?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 11.3
