Did I need to replace my iPhone 6s?

My iPhone6s overheated and wouldn't charge or reboot. Only gave apple logo or picture of battery with red line and the charger cord aimed at it. Went to Apple store. Genius said, wasn't battery. Sold entirely new iPhone6s $299.00. No mention of Apple give back. He kept my old phone. New phone came in box without earbuds or charger. I'm on disability and would like to know if this is proper procedure.

You did not buy a new old phone. You got an out of warranty replacement, for the standard out of warranty replacement fee.

See here for prices:

The replacement phone is identical to the one you had in all respects. Same model, storage, and status. It also carries the remainder of the warranty of the replaced iPhone or 90 days whichever is longer.

The replacement iPhone is guaranteed by Apple to be in new or as new condition and functionality. It should have come in a brown box, they may have opened in the store before handing it to you. You don't get new accessories because you kept the accessories of the phone being replaced.

The phone being replaced is not returned, Apple keeps it and recycles it.

This is standard procedure. There is nothing out of the ordinary about what happened.
