USB Bus ... works ... only sometimes

I just bought a brand new powered USB bus (Certified Data) for my iMac, whose 4 USB slots filled fast.

With the bus - Apple mouse does not work

iTunes recognizes phone and syncs

Photos does not recognize phone

*** This latter is weird because the O/S has recognized the phone, so I'm really in the dark why Photos wouldn't see it

I see there are lots of problems with USB busses. So ... Is it a problem with my USB bus, or would another USB bus work 100% with my Mac?

Thanks both for your suggestions and interest. I decided to return the bus to the store. Interestingly, I took in my mouse that didn't work with it, and my phone sync cable which didn't completely work. All that kit worked fine with an in-store Mac. However, against the advise of the store rep, who said we had proved it wasn't the usb bus, I got them to replace it with another bus, same make and model, just in case ... just in case it worked! And it did. The new bus does everything just the way it's supposed to.

If you try the below and it still doesn't work, I'd try a new USB bus.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Also try the Safe Mode.

I am unclear on what you mean when you say

Are you saying you purchased a 4 port USB Hub to give you 4 additional USB ports for your iMac? I think that is what you are saying, but I'm unsure.

Yes, USB Hubs can have issues.

Your iMac has USB3 ports, is this USB Hub a USB3 or USB2 powered hub?

Is your Apple Mouse a USB wired mouse? or is it a Bluetooth mouse?

If it is a wired USB mouse, does the mouse work if it is plugged into a USB port on the back of your iMac?

If you have a Bluetooth mouse, and plugging the USB Hub into the iMac causes the mouse to fail, that would tend to imply that the USB Hub is causing radio interference. A USB3 external device that is not properly shielded to prevent electromagnitic interference (EMI) has harmonic frequencies that disrupt devices working 2.4GHz radios. Bluetooth used 2.4GHz, one of the WiFi frequencies ranges is in the 2.4GHz range. Poor EMI shielding can be the device (such as a USB Hub), or it can be the USB cable.

Again, I would ONLY suspect EMI IF AND ONLY IF your mouse is a Bluetooth wireless Apple mouse.

You say it is a "Powered" USB Hub? Did you plug in the external power supply for the USB Hub? If not, then it has to draw all its power from the single iMac USB port you plugged the USB Hub into? Without an external power adapter plugged into the USB Hub, it is possible for the USB devices attached to the USB Hub to draw too much power and cause some or all of the devices attached to the USB Hub to not work correctly.

You can use Applications -> Utilities -> System Information -> USB to see what the power information is for the different things plugged into your iMac. As I do not have ANY devices plugged into my laptop at the moment, I cannot tell you exactly what you might see, only that System Information does give some USB bus power information.

My bottom line option is that unless it is something simple, like plugging in the USB Hub's external power adapter (into a working plug 🙂 ), I would consider returning this USB Hub and getting a different model. Maybe seeing if you can get a some reviews. Maybe Google: "best mac usb3 powered hubs"
